JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The Canal Department in eastern Nangarhar province says it will send vegetables grown in greenhouses to other provinces in near future.
Maulvi Ghulam Rahman Kazim, director of the Canal Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News cucumbers, tomatoes, green chilies and other vegetables were ripe and being collected by farmers.
Kazim expected a high yield of vegetables from about 100 greenhouses in future.
“The department has established 100 greenhouses, but they do not meet the needs of people. We plan to create more greenhouses,” he added.
The director said they planned to send the produce to other provinces as well. In case of need, he added, they would grow more vegetables and raise the number of greenhouses.
The greenhouses have been leased out to agricultural companies.
One greenhouse worker Jan Wali, a said he had no job before and had to leave the country. Now that he has got the chance to work at a greenhouse, he no longer needs to go abroad.
“I am happy to work here and grow tomatoes, cucumbers, chilies and eggplants and make halal money for my family.”
Ahmad Shah, another greenhouse worker; asked the government for the distribution of more modified seeds for better vegetable products to meet the needs of people.
