KABUL (Pajhwok): Kazakhstan’s president has won a second term in office, the election panel announced on Monday.

In the snap election on Sunday, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev bagged 81.31% of the vote, the Central Election Commission said.

Expected to extend his rule by seven more years, the re-elected leader has a robust mandate to continue pursuing his independent foreign policy, according to Reuters.

Voter turnout was put at 69.44%, with Tokayev’s five rivals polling negligible numbers of ballots.

Several Central Asian leaders congratulated Tokayev, who found his way to the Kazakh presidency won his first election in 2019, on winning re-election.
