500,000 metric tons of goods imported, exported via railroads

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghanistan Railway Authority on Thursday said nearly 500,000 metric tons of goods were imported and 2,000 tons exported through the country’s railroads during the past one month.

The authority on its Twitter page said a total of 502,000 and 39 metric tons of goods were imported and exported through railways last month.

It said 399,983 tons of goods were imported to the country through Hairatan railway, 29,375 tons through the Aqia railway and 70631 tons through Torghundi railway, with the total weight reaching 499,989 metric tons

During the same period, 2,500 tons of goods were exported to foreign countries, mostly dried fruits and talcum powder, through the railroads.

Afghanistan Railway Authority spokesman Sami Durrani told Pajhwok Afghan News the imports included wheat, flour, cooking oil, other food items and liquefied gas. The items were imported from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Russia and China.

The exported goods included talcum powder and dried fruits (raisins, almonds, pistachios, pine nuts and walnuts). The items were exported to Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

The Railway Authority said it was trying to further facilitate traders in transportation of goods.

Last month, the authority said exports and imports jumped by 22 percent during the past six months.

During the last six months, 1.7 million tons of good were imported and over 158,000 tons of good were exported and 1.4bn afs revenue submitted to the national kitty.
