AIBAK (Pajhwok): At least 19 people were killed and 24 others wounded as a result of a bomb explosion in the capital of northern Samangan province on Wednesday.

The blast took place inside Al-Jahadia in Shahristan area shortly after 1pm during noon prayer, a provincial official said.

Ferozuddin Munib, director of information and culture, told Pajhwok Afghan News 19 people were killed and 23 more wounded.

Dr. Sayed Usman Hamidi, director of public health, said 19 bodies and 25 injured had been brought to hospital from the blast site.

He added all the victims were students of the seminary, aged above 16.

Maulvi Nizamuddin Obaidi, a seminary teacher, condemned the explosion and urged the Islamic Emirate to ensure security for religious schools.

He said two of his nephews were killed and his son wounded in the blast.

However, eyewitnesses say the actual number of victims was higher than official figures.
