UNAMA trying to establish facts about Daikundi deaths

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says they had asked the Taliban to hold a ‘credible investigation’ into reports of extrajudicial killings, including of children, in northern Daikundi province.

The incident took place in Siwak Shiber area last week. At that time, Islamic Emirate spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid had claimed that militants had assembled in a house in the area and elders were sent to ask them to lay down their weapons.

However, the gunmen refused to lay their weapons down, compelling security forces to enter the house and in the ensuing clash, one security official was killed and two others were injured, according to Mujahid.

He had said nine militants were killed and two others were injured during the firefight.

UNAMA in a tweet said it was working to establish facts on the incident in Siwak, Daikundi. There were serious reports of civilian casualties, with extrajudicial killings.

The mission said there were at least eight fatalities, including children. UNAMA has engaged Taliban on the need for credible investigation and accountability.

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) had also described the incident as shocking and sad. The fund said four children aged 1 and 14 years were killed in the incident and called for a thoroughgoing investigation.
