27 convicts publicly flogged, jailed in Helmand, Zabul

LASHKARGAH/QALAT (Pajhwok): Twenty-seven people including women after being convicted of various crimes by courts were publicly flogged in southern Helmand and Zabul provinces.

Maulvi Mohammad Qasim Riaz, Deputy Director of Information and Culture Department of Helmand province, told Pajhwok Afghan News the 20 men accused of robbery and illicit relations were whipped in public after being convicted.

This is the first time convicts are publicly flogged in Helmand after the caretaker government’s coming to power.

Earlier, such corporal punishments had been given to criminals by courts in different provinces, including Kabul.

In Qalat city, the capital of Zabul province, seven people arrested for various crimes were lashed and sentenced to different jails terms.

Maulvi Rehmatullah Hamad, director of information and culture of the province, told Pajhwok that seven people, including two women, had been arrested on charges of various crimes.

He said one of the seven people, who had stolen a motorcycle, was awarded 20 lashes and three months in prison.

A woman who was arrested for illicit relationship was lashed 39 times and sentenced to three years imprisonment.

Another married woman, who had eloped with a man, was given 20 lashes and one year in prison sentence.

Another person arrested for illicit relations was lashed 10 times and was sentenced to one month in prison.

The convicts were flogged at Sheikh Mati Stadium. Maulvi Asghar, City Court director, said: “The punishment was not meant to insult anyone, but it was given for the sake of the people to learn lesson and to create fear in people’s hearts to save themselves from bad deeds.

He asked the convicts to repent their crimes and not to repeat them in the future.
