Nearly 3,000 graduate from literacy course in Parwan

CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): At least 2,964 individuals, including 1,388 women, graduated from a one-year literacy course in central Parwan province.

Nizamuddin Rahimi, head of the Literacy Department, told reporters during the graduation ceremony that most of the graduates were those who had been left out of education.

Mawlawi Obaidullah Aminzada, the governor of Parwan, said: “The purpose of the revelation of the Holy Quran was to fight ignorance and illiteracy and to bring the mankind out of darkness to light. We can fight ignorance and illiteracy by organizing such programs to eradicate illiteracy from the Islamic society.”

Shamsullah, 30, a resident of Parcha Cheshom area of Charikar city, is the one of the graduates who learned reading and writing in one year.

He said: “I thank the Islamic Emirate for including us in the literacy course. We learned many things. If I had not attended this course, I would have remained illiterate for the rest of my life. Now I’m very happy that I can read and write.”

According to a report of the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the number of literates in Afghanistan increased from 34 to 43 percent in 1400 solar year.

The illiterate population of Afghanistan reaches 12 million, of which 7.2 million are women and 4.8 million are men.

Based on reports, in the last two decades, one million and 242,000 people, including 800,000 women, benefited from literacy programs in the country.
