Nangarhar University female medical students stage protest

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Female medical faculty students of the university in eastern Nangarhar province on Wednesday protested against the Ministry of Higher Education’s decision.

This morning when students of the faculty arrived on the campus in Jalalabad, the administration of the faculty allowed only male students and asked the female students to leave.

In videos and photos published on social media, the female students could be seen protesting and raising slogans.

Pajhwok tried to talk to the students in this regard, but failed.

A teacher at the Nangarhar University Faculty of Medicine told Pajhwok Afghan News on the condition of anonymity that male students disrupted the examination process in reaction to the decision of the Ministry of Higher Education when female students were not allowed to sit the exam.

“Later, the chancellor of Nangarhar University Prof. Sahib Behsudwal came to the faculty. There are two exams left for all the students, so he assured the students that both exams will be taken tomorrow and then the faculty will go on vacations."

Nangarhar University department officials refused to comment and said the Ministry of Higher Education should be asked in this regard.

Last night, the Ministry of Higher Education announced that higher education for girls has been suspended until further notice.

Ziaullah Hashmi, a spokesman for the ministry, late last night published an official notification of the ministry on his Twitter page.
