UK to IEA: Lift ban on women staff of aid agencies

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Kingdom is concerned the caretaker government’s ban on Afghan women working for aid groups will stop millions of people from receiving assistance.

As international aid agencies suspended operations after the ban, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly blamed the new Afghan rulers for trying to erase women from society.

According to The Independent, the foreign secretary asked the Taliban administration to revoke the decision, which could leave millions of Afghans suffering.

“Banning women from working for NGOs will prevent millions of Afghans from accessing life-saving aid and supplies. This will impact everyone.”

In a tweet on Monday, cleverly stressed urged the Taliban to urgently reverse the decision, which was announced on Saturday by Economy Minister Qari Din Mohammed Hanif.

Ramiz Alakbarov, acting head of the UN mission in Afghanistan, met Hanif on Monday and underlined the need for lifting the ban.
