Restrictions on Afghan women, girls worry India

KABUL (Pajhwok): India has voiced its utmost ‘concern’ at the Afghan government’s ban on women’s access to universities and working for local and global NGOs.

India's UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj said on Wednesday her country consistently supported women’s education in the war-torn country.

India Today quoted her as referring to New Delhi’s emphasised on the formation of an inclusive and representative government that guarantees equal rights for women and girls.

The collective voice of the UN Security Council was reflected in the press statement issued on December 27; the ambassador added.

In the statement, the 15-member council said it was deeply alarmed by the Taliban barring women and girls from attending universities.

She promised India's policy towards Afghanistan would continue to be guided by its historical friendship and special relationship with the Afghans.
