FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): A miner was rescued on Saturday after remaining trapped under rubble of a landslide for 40 hours in Yawan district of northeastern Badakhshan province.
A number of people were trapped inside a gold mine due to a landslide on Thursday afternoon in Khairabad village of Manzil Dasht area of Yawan district.
Muazuddin Ahmadi, Director of Information and Culture of Badakhshan, said one of the trapped miners, Sifatullah, was rescued after 40 hours at around 12:40 this afternoon.
He said the rescued person had been taken to hospital in Faizabad, the provincial capital, for treatment.
Ahmadi quoted the rescued person as saying that he heard the voices of the trapped people and they were alive.
Badakhshan governor Maulvi Amanuddin Mansour visited the site along with heads of some departments to monitor the rescue operation.
The governor said technical teams continued their rescue operation in cooperation with local people and there were hopes the trapped people would be dug out safely.
He said the rescue teams equipped with medicines, clothes and food items had reached the scene yesterday in helicopters of the Ministry of Defense.
Ahmadi said three people had been trapped under the soil and one of them was rescued today.
However, a resident of the area, Mohammad Naseer, yesterday told Pajhwok that eight people were buried under the soil.
He said that two people were rescued alive yesterday morning, but the fate of several others remained unknown.
