KABUL (Pajhwok): Cabinet has approved two billion afs counter the land erosion and compensate loses incurred by the flood water to the local residents.

Amu River flow between Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan for 1,126 kilometres distance and its water source is Pamir Mountains.

According to Government Media and Information Centre (GMIC), Mujeeb Rahman, deputy minister of Energy and Water, said that cabinet has immediately approved two billion afs to counter the losses incurred by the river water.

Mohammad Ismeal, deputy minister of tribes and border affairs, demanded the provision of facilities for affected people and designation of zero point.

Earlier, Acting Agriculture Minister Mawlavi Attaullah Umari had assessed the problems faced by the high flood in Amu River and assured the residents that fortification of the river bank would start soon.

Umari, on the head of a high level delegation visited Takhar province and observed the damage made by Amur River. He said the matter of Amur River’s flood destruction often rose in the cabinet meeting.

He admitted that the Amu floods have destroyed thousands of acres of agricultural land, residential houses and grasslands as a result of the lack of reinforcements, that they will make serious efforts to solve this problem so that people will not worry about floods in these areas after this.

The acting minister assured that he assessed the problems faced by the people closely and the fortification process would be launched soon.

Local residents hailed the visit of high level delegation decision to start the fortification of Amur River bank.

Azizullah Nasiri, the resident of Takhar’s Dasht-i-Qala, said: “Every year, as a result of the lack of reinforcements in the Amu River, thousands of acres of agricultural land, dozens of residential houses and grasslands were destroyed, but now that the government has paid attention to the demand of the local people and has sent a delegation, we welcome it.”

With the start of the work of Amu River fortifications, tens of people will be provided with work opportunity and agricultural lands, residential houses, and grasslands will no longer be victims of floods
