KABUL (Pajhwok): The caretaker government has reiterated its stance on women’s education, stressing that the schooling of females must comply with Afghanistan’s values and Islamic teachings.
Last year, the caretaker government barred Afghan girls from secondary school before banning women from university education this month.
The restrictions on women and girls are not permanent, according to a government spokesman, who explained their education has been suspended.
In an interview published on Monday, Suhail Shaheen said: “I would like to make it clear that it is not a permanent ban on women’s education, it has been postponed until a conducive environment is created for their education.”
Speaking to a Chinese newspaper, Shaheen said work was ongoing in full swing on creating the right environment for women’s education in the country.
The South China Morning Post quoted him as insisting that IEA leaders were in no way opposed to women’s education but wanted to ensure an environment compliant with their values.
