104 individuals, 70,000 animals die in cold wave, fires

ATLANTA (Pajhwok): Over a hundred people have died due to the cold wave, snowfall and fire incidents in different parts of the country, an official of the Islamic Emirate says.

Over the past fortnight, central, northern and northwestern parts of the country have been in the grip of biting cold, creating multiple problems for the people.

Pajhwok Afghan News recently quoted officials in some provinces as saying that 88 individuals had so far died because of the harsh winter.

On Sunday, the BBC quoted a spokesman for the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) as saying: “The recent unfortunate incidents of cold weather, floods, fires and gas inhalation have killed 104 people, partially or completely torched 50 houses and lef about 70,000 livestock dead in Takhar, Badakhshan, Nimroz, Kandahar, Laghman, Ghazni, Uruzgan, Jawzjan, Sar-i-Pul, Faryab, Paktika, Balkh, Samangan, Bamyan and Herat provinces.”

ANDMA had dispatched teams to the affected provinces to survey the losses ahead of aid distribution to victims, Rahimi said.

“Some governmental bodies and welfare organisations distributed aid packages to about 40,000 families in different parts of the country over the last month,” the ANDMA spokesman added.
