KABUL (Pajhwok): The ban on education for girls is not permanent, Minister of Interior Khalifa Sirajuddin Haqqani assured the UN aid chief on Tuesday.

The clash of opinion on the current education system was resolvable, Haqqani said at a meeting with UN Under-Secretary General Martin Griffiths.

A statement from the Ministry of Interior said Haqqani welcomed humanitarian aid to Afghans from the UN and other international organisations.

He referred to more than four decades of war in the century, saying all Afghans had to work hard for Afghanistan’s self-reliance through education. “Education is a necessity for the well-being of our nation.”

At the meeting, Griffiths called for the reversal of the ban on women’s education and work with NGOs. The basic rights of women be restored, he insisted.

Haqqani claimed Afghanistan had emerged as a unified and sovereign state after several decades. Security had been bolstered and the world should support positive developments in Afghanistan, he added.

Griffiths and the team accompanying him also met Economy Minister Qari Din Mohammad Hanif, who underlined the need for transparency in distribution of humanitarian aid.

The minister stressed enhanced coordination among relevant ministries and departments, 0n providing permanent job opportunities for the people.
