KABUL (Pajhwok): A senior UN official says the global fraternity’s best leverage to convince the caretaker Afghan government into lifting restrictions on Afghan women’s rights is its aspiration for international recognition.
On her return from a two-week trip to the region, including Afghanistan, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said the interim government in Kabul wanted the world to recognise it.
She told journalists in New York on Wednesday: “Recognition is one leverage that we have and should hold on to.”
VoA quoted the UN deputy chief as saying that the Taliban highlighted their achievements in banishing corruption and eradicating poppy production besides implementing a general amnesty.
The IEA also insisted on continued humanitarian assistance to the Afghans despite their ban on women working with national and international aid groups, she said.
