PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan and Russia have agreed to work jointly for promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan
The two sides vowed enhanced cooperation on Afghanistan in the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
Visiting Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov announced their agreement at a joint media briefing after talks in Moscow on Monday.
Lavrov told reporters they talked in detail about the current situation in Afghanistan, which was directly linked to the elimination of terrorist threats from the region.
TASS news agency quoted him as saying: “So far, unfortunately, it has not happened, but efforts are being made. We agreed to use SCO capabilities -- the SCO-Afghanistan contact group in particular.”
For his part, Bilawal said he had a fruitful discussion with the Russian foreign minister on energy cooperation. Both countries wanted to step up bilateral relations, he added.
In Islamabad, the Foreign Office confirmed the situation in Afghanistan and cooperation in SCO were discussed at the meeting in Moscow.
Pakistan and Russia had good cooperation on Afghanistan, where they wanted to achieve common goals of peace and stability, Bilawal Zardari remarked.
