KABUL (Pajhwok): Urging traders and common people to use the afghani in their daily transactions, the office of the Prime Minister on Tuesday banned carrying US dollars exceeding $5000 limit out of the country through airports and $500 through border crossings.

In a press release, the PM office asked all traders, moneychangers, stone traders and all citizens to strictly obey the ban.

All citizens should use the national currency, afghanis, in their daily transactions, the statement said, adding that no one could take more than $5000 through the country’s airports and more than $500 through the land borders in cash.

The statement said the violators would be punished to jail terms ranging from 10 days to one months and one year and the money and gold seized from the violators would be kept in Da Afghanistan Bank until the Prime Minister office’s approval.

The statement also said bringing currencies of regional countries to Afghanistan was also banned. It was responsibility of the Intelligence Directorate, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defense to prevent smuggling of currencies, gold, precious stones and historical relics.
