KABUL (Pajhwok): Senior UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Official Andrea Cairola has pledged advocate for the financial support of Afghanistan journalists and media outlets.
Hujatullah Mujadidi, head of Afghan Independent Journalists Union (AIJU) said on Thursday that during a meeting with UNESCO official, emphasis was made on the economic support of Afghan media and journalist.
Hujatullah Mujadidi tweeted on Wednesday: “The leadership of Afghan Independent Journalists Union (AIJU) and the adviser of UNESCO discussed freedom of speech and safety of journalists and some other important issues”.
The source said Cairola stressed on the support of Afghan journalists and added that he would draw the attention of UNESCO to the poor economic situation of Afghan journalists and media and pay their timely salaries.
Cairola promised to call for the economic support the Afghan journalists and media, the source added.
Afghan Journalists Center, on 30 of December said, after the political change in Afghanistan and the collapse of the former regime and the takeover of ‘Islamic Emirate’ two huge changes have come in media of Afghanistan while 600 of (sound, broadcast, print & internet) media outlets were closed, hundreds of journalists left the country and the women journalists were also marginalized.
According to the reports, after the takeover by the current caretaker government in Afghanistan, 219 broadcasting and print media outlets were closed while 547 media outlets were active prior to that.
