KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran says it has received little international support for hosting Afghan refugees amid the growing cost of living.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian raised the issue in meetings with Geneva-based heads of international humanitarian organisations on Tuesday evening.
Amirabdollahian met senior officials of UNHCR, International Migration Organisation, Red Cross and UN Humanitarian Assistance Coordination Office representatives.
At meetings with other officials in Geneva, he cited the current situation in Afghanistan, particularly over the past 18 months, which triggered large-scale immigration.
“Iran has been hosting millions of Afghan immigrants over the past four decades. Unfortunately, the extent of international support has been quite inappropriate…” he regretted.
US-imposed sanctions had massively affected Iran’s capacity to host the Afghans, he said, urging international organisations to spike support for the refugees.
