KABUL (Pajhwok): The European Union (EU) has slapped sanctions on two senior officials of the interim Afghan government for their alleged involvement in violations of women’s rights.
The bloc also sanctioned Russian military officers and police, as well as an Iranian prison facility, the European Union said in a statement on Tuesday.
Acting Ministers of Higher Education Neda Mohammad Nadim and for Virtue and Vice Minister Mohammad Khalid Hanafi are among the individuals sanctioned.
The EU said the IEA cabinet members were behind the decrees banning women from higher education and NGO jobs.
The listed individuals and entities will be subject to an asset freeze in EU states as well as a ban on travel to European countries.
Moscow police commander Lt. Col. Alexander Georgievich Fedorinov and one of his men were sanctioned for authorising the arrest and torture, of female anti-war protestors.
The EU also hit the Qarchak prison in Teheran with curbs after a wave of protests over the death of Mahsa Amini after her arrest.
