PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan and the United States have agreed to increase dialogue on regional and global threatsand improve cooperation on countering violent extremism.

At two-day talks in Islamabad, the two sides discussed the counterterrorism landscape in Pakistan and the broader region.

The Foreign Office said the dialogue focussed on areas where the two could better collaborate on countering regional and global threats.

The meeting was chaired by Christopher Landberg, acting coordinator for counterterrorism at the State Department, and Syed Haider Shah, additional secretary for the UN and Economic Diplomacy at Foreign Office.

There has been an uptick in incidents of terrorism in recent months in Pakistan, with the US pledging help in dealing with the deteriorating security situation.

Pakistan blames the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan and the Islamic State-Khurasan (IS-K) groups for the spike in terror attacks. It says Afghanistan-based militants are behind the fresh wave of terror.

On the other hand, the interim Afghan government has repeatedly promised that no one will be allowed to use Afghanistan’s territory against any country.
