Mild intensity quake rattles Takhar & Badakhshan

KABUL (Pajhwok): A magnitude 5.1 earthquake rattled northern Takhar province on Saturday, but information about casualties was not immediately available.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported the temblor struck Taloqan, the provincial capital, at a 149 km depth.

According to India’s National Centre for Seismology, the tremors were also felt 213 km east of Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan, at 6:51am.

However, there were no reports of any damage to property or casualties in Afghanistan — a country situated in a quake-prone zone.

Up to 1,163 people were killed and more than 2,000 others wounded in Afghanistan and Pakistan in a strong earthquake in June 2022.
