Over 38,500 acre of land retaken from grabbers in Takhar, Farah

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): About 26,000 acres of grabbed land has been retaken in Takhar and 12,500 acres in Farah province, officials say.

Mohammad Arif, spokesman for the Takhar governor, told Pajhwok Afghan New: “The Commission to Prevent Land Grab wrested back over the past two months 26,000 acres of land, including deserts, pastures, farmlands and residential areas, in Taloqan, Baharak and Khwaja Ghar districts, as well as other parts of the province.”

The land retaken would be given on lease to the individuals who previously used it for personal benefits, Arif added.

Meanwhile, ordinary people welcomed the governmental action, saying that all state-owned lands be seized back from usurpers.

Nasrullah, a resident of Taloqan, said: “Recovering plundered state lands from powerful individuals, who have benefited from them for years, will enhance people’s trust in the government.”

Abdul Sami Khawari, a civil society activist, also hailed the recovery of the grabbed land. The implementation of the process could lead to the retaking of thousands of usurped pastures and other government land in remote areas, he believed.

In a similar development, officials in western Farah province reported the recapture of 12,500 acres of land from grabbers.

In a statement, the Information and Culture Department said over 12.500 acres of usurped land was identified and taken back from grabbers during the past year in different parts of Farah.

However, the statement did not offer details about the fate of the land-grabbers.

The commission tasked with recovering grabbed lands jerked into action on October 22, 2022.

This panel is comprised of representatives from the ministries of justice, agriculture and Livestock, urban development, works and social affairs and the Attorney General Office.
