Kabul blast: UN says attacks on civilians unacceptable

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Tuesday denounced the Kabul bombing and called the targeting of civilians an unacceptable action.

Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran told Pajhwok Afghan News security forces identified and shot dead the suicide bomber before he could reach his target in the second police district of the capital.

He said as a result of the attacker’s death, the explosives strapped to his body went off, killing six civilians and injuring a number of others. Three Mujahideen were also injured in the incident.

In a statement, UNAMA said a child was also among the victims.

Maulvi Abdul Kabir, deputy prime minister, also condemned the attack and said such barbaric acts exposed the “real faces of the enemies of Islam and Afghans”.

Dr Abdullah Abdullah, former reconciliation council chief, also denounced the bombing as an act against humanity and Islamic teachings.

Additionally, ex-president Hamid Karzai condemned the attack on his Twitter handle.

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West tweeted: “Terrible reports of a suicide attack in Kabul. Afghans have suffered enough, and terrorism for any reason at any place is indefensible. Sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and to those injured.”
