SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Some women in Shiberghan, the capital of northern Jawzjan province, have hailed the improved service of the maternity branch in the Provincial Hospital and demanded more improvement and the availability of free medicines.

According to the information of the Provincial Health Department, 4,800 births registered last year in the maternity branch with most of them of a male sex. Of the total delivery cases, 1,200 conducted through operations

Patients hail improved service:

Gul Bibi, who gave birth to her second child in this hospital, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “The service of the hospital has much improved; doctors paid attention the patients and were merciful. They gave us some medicine as well, while in the past I took medicine from outside, they discharged patients soon from the hospital because there was no enough space.”

Her child was born through medical operation and for three days she received the needed medicine from the hospital.

“I am 32, hospitalized for the delivery of my second child, doctors were really helpful and my child is completely health,” she said.

She added during pregnancy she came to the hospital for checkup but due to a large number of patients and lack of space patients were faced with the problems.

She hoped that the hospital will continue offering improved service to its patients and would provide all the medicine to the patients free of cost.

Sharafat, another woman who come to the hospital for delivery, said: “During pregnancy I faced a lot of problems but here the doctors helped me a lot.”

She said during her first pregnancy she was unable to eat good food due to economic problems thus after few hours of delivery her child died.

She currently gave birth to daughter and added she received most of medicines from inside the hospital.

Taza Gul who brought his daughter in law for delivery to the hospital, said: “All the medical service and necessary medicines are provided free of cost here.”

He said the distribution of medicine was a positive step because most of families are economically not sound and it would be difficult for them to buy medicines.

Officials pledges to further improve health service:

Dr. Wesalah Yasa Sharif, a gynecology specialist, said: “The maternity branch was one of the key sections of the hospital where 10 doctors as many nurses and five midwives were performing services.”

“Twenty-four hours service is provided and every personnel has its own turn of duty,” she said.

She said most of women remained careless during pregnancy and when their condition deteriorates they referred to the hospital which sometimes cost the lives of mother and child.

Dr. Sharif said: “Women should be very careful to their health condition during pregnancy and referred to the doctor monthly for check, especially after the fourth month of pregnancy.”

She said during one month more than 400 child delivery are conducted through operation, adding that if mothers remained careful regarding he delivery the number of operation could decline.

Health Department Director Qari Zabihullah Hussaini acknowledge some problems existed in the past and added more facilities and services had been provided to the patients of maternity hospital after the hospital was shifted to the new building and more personnel were appointed to the maternity section.

“We have no problems with the personnel and equipment because all these issues were addressed before the hospital could be shifted to its new building,” said Hussaini.

He said due to the fact the maternity ward needed a huge space so it was not shifted to the new building and was still operating in the old building.

“Besides improved health services we provided dried milk and other infant food to the newly born children. These items are provided to the health department by aid providing NGOs,” he added.
