ATLANTA (Pajhwok): Pakistan will launch military operations against terrorists and extremists after Ramadan, says the National Security Committee (NSC).
Pakistani media reported the announcement came at a meeting of the committee, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Friday.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said the military leadership and some members of the cabinet attended the meeting.
Pakistan has announced the launch of military offensives in the wake of a recent surge in terrorist attacks in the country.
The statement linked the rising security incidents to the soft attitude of the previous government towards the outlawed Tehreek-i- Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
The release of terrorists by the former government led by Imran Khan was cited as another reason for the worsening security situation.
The statement claimed attacks had escalated as a result of cooperation with TTP by some terrorist groups based in Afghanistan.
The NSC meeting agreed to launch comprehensive operations after the holy month of Ramadan against terrorists and extremists.
Another committee was tasked with sharing proposals with the government about launching the operations in two weeks.
