QALAT (Pajhwok): A new private radio called “Pegham” has started broadcasting in Qalat, the capital of southern Zabul province.
Owner of the radio station, Rohullah Hakimi, said at the radio’s launch ceremony that he activated the Pegham (message) radio station using his own resources. He said the radio would air broadcasts for 16 hours with the help of 15 employees.
He added the radio could also be heard in Maroof and Arghistan districts of neighboring Kandahar province besides Qalat and districts of Zabul.
He said they would try to air standard programs in religious, educational, health, social, economic, sports, agricultural and news fields.
He expressed the hope that government agencies and media support organizations would support the radio financially in addition to sharing information with them.
Maulvi Abdul Hanan, Zabul information and culture director, said his department supported local media and journalists and had always tried to solve their problems with regard to economic constrains and access to information.
He added that the media should be supported because it worked for the people and reflected their voices.
Mohammad Lal Amiri, provincial manager of the Afghanistan Education Foundation in Zabul, said many radio stations were closed due to economic and other problems after the political change in the country, but on the contrary, new radio stations were coming to the airwaves in Zabul.
He added that the launch of the Pegham radio was good news and hoped it programs would have a positive impact on people’s lives.
The launch of the new radio station in Zabul brought the total number of radio stations in Zabul to six, including one owned by the government.
