KABUL (Pajhwok): The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has rejected the latest UN Security Council resolution, condemning the ban on women working for the world body.
In an expected move on Thursday, the 15-member council adopted a resolution denouncing the IEA decision on barring women from working for the UN.
In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs defended the ban as an internal matter of Afghanistan that did not impact operations by the UN or other countries.
A statement from the ministry said: “This is an internal social matter of Afghanistan that does not impact outside states.”
The ministry reminded the UN member states of their commitments to respect the sovereign choices of Afghanistan under international law.
It said: “We remain committed to ensuring the rights of Afghan women while emphasising that diversity must be respected and not politicized.”
The ministry called for the unconditional removal of UN, multilateral and unilateral sanctions on the country, in addition to the provision of humanitarian and development assistance.
While welcoming humanitarian aid, the ministry stressed the ongoing crisis could be resolved only through the removal of restrictions on the country.
It went on to urge the world to help Afghanistan address the issue of climate change, economic, infrastructural and development needs of its people.
“We stand ready to work jointly with neighbours, regional and world countries and organisations to tackle challenges such as humanitarian access, economic recovery, trade and transit.
The ministry also sought an end to the seizure of Afghan central bank assets, cooperation in areas of development, security and narcotics through dialogue and engagement.
