AIBAK (Pajhwok): Some civil society activists in northern Samangan province have demanded the protection of historic sites and asked the government to prevent illegal excavations in these sites.

Faizullah Qazizada, a civil society activist, told Pajhwok Afghan News that historic sites determined the depth of a nation’s civilization and these sites should be protected.

He said Afghanistan had 5,000 old history and many people ruled during these years who left behind several historic sites and items in place.

He asked the government to work hard for the protection of historic sites and prevent self-proclaimed digging and excavation at historic sites in Samangan.

Hameedullah Ahmadi, another civil society activist, said: “The historical monuments of a country represent the identity and culture of that country, preserving these monuments allows us to learn more about the historical aspects of a country and requires us to make more efforts to preserve it.”

He said these historic sites were about to perish and if efforts were not taken for their preservation they will disappear soon.

Mohammad Amin Aziz, director historic sites protection at the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs, said 90 historic sites had been registered in the province which included holy sites and shrines situated in Aibak and districts.

He added historic sites were on the verge of erosion and if efforts were not taken they would be completely eradicated.

He named Hazarsam Kojar, Bala Hisar Sharh Qadem, Hazarsam and Roi Du Ab district, Takht Ansherwan Adel, Takhat Changez, Kona Qala Langar and other historic sites and demanded government attention for the protection of these sites.

He said excavation and digging at historic sites took place during the past regime and added during the ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’ (IEA) no such incident had  been recorded.

Police Spokesperson Munir Rahimi said nobody would be allowed digging in historic site or places where historic items existed.

“Digging at historic sites was not allowed and people should remove their concerns in this regard because nobody would be allowed to do digging at historic sites,” he said.
