PARON (Pajhwok): Poppy crop grown on hundreds of acres land has been eradicated in eastern Nuristan province, an official said on Tuesday, but residents say farmers should be provided with alternative source of income.

Nuristan governor’s spokesman Saifuddin Laton told Pajhwok Afghan News the banned plant had been grown in some remote areas of the eastern and western parts of the province and it was eradicated during a campaign in compliance with the decree of the Islamic Emirate’s leadership.

The poppy eradication campaign was carried out in Kamdesh, Bargimatal, Doab, Norgram and Want Waigal districts. The banned crop was destroyed on 750 acres of land in these districts during the past one month, Laton said.

He said the cultivation of poppy would be brought to zero soon. Laton said that Wama and Mandol were the two districts where no poppy was grown this year.

He said a small amount of poppy might have been left untouched in some remote areas, but security and intelligence forces would destroy them as well.

Nuristan residents said they were happy over the eradication of the illicit plant, but asked the government to provide farmers with alternative source of income.

Abdul Qahar Adil, a resident of Bargimatal district, told Pajhwok that poppy grown in their area was also destroyed.

He said farmers should be provided with alternative source of income in order to encourage them to avoid growing poppies.

Gul Zaman, a resident of Want Waigal district said farmers should be provided with improved quality seeds.

He said farmers whose poppy crop was destroyed should be given cash assistance because Nuristan had little agricultural land and these farmers would face problems.

Mohammad Hanif, agricultural extension officer at the Nuristan Department of Agriculture, told Pajhwok farmers had been provided seeds in the past and they would be assisted in future as well.

He said farmers would be provided trainings and awareness as well.
