SAR-I-PUL (Pajhwok): Some farmers in northern Sar-i-Pul province have complained against the unfair use of river water and said the use of water pumps by the residents of Kohistanat district dried up the river water.

The claimed that some water flowing naturally in the river were extracted and used for the irrigation of crops asking the government to take action in this regard.

Abdul Ghani, one of the farmers from the Alizai village of Sar-i-Pul City, said the water of Sar-i-Pul River had dried up after the residents of Kohistanat district used water pumps to extract for the irrigation of their land.

“Farmers and livestock direly need water; we want the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to remove water pumps from the river side so that the water could reach to all farmers.”

Bura, another farmer from from the Syedabad village of Sar-i-Pul City, said that farmers in the provincial capital have no water to irrigate their lands he said people in Kohistanat used water pumps to irrigate their crops.

Qari Rohullah, head of the Sar-i-Pul River Zone, said that a letter been sent to Kohistanat district in which they were asked to stop the irrigation of rain-feed lands by using water pumps.

“With the support of the Governor Office the water of Sar-i-Pul River is now used eight days by farmers in Sar-i-Pul City and 28 days by farmers in Kohistanat district,” he said.

He warned individuals using river water unfairly and illegally would be dealt according to the law.
