FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): A campaign has been launched to vaccinate cows against the Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in northeastern Badakhshan province.

Qari Qutbuddin Dehnawi, director of Agriculture and Livestock Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) had provided 230,000 LSD vaccine doses.

He said the LSD vaccine would be distributed to cows and buffalos in 28 districts and in Faizabad City, the provincial capital.

LSD is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle and buffalo that causes relatively low mortality. It does not affect humans. The disease can result in animal welfare issues and significant production losses.

LSD was first reported in Asia and the Pacific region in 2019 in north-west China, Bangladesh and India. During the northern summer of 2020, LSD has continued its spread across continental Asia with many members in South and South East Asia confirming outbreaks.

Behnawi said LSD is somehow similar to smallpox virous of goats and sheep and it caused complications and pests on the skin of the infected animal.
