In Baghlan, 53 new historic sites registered

PULIKHUMRI (Pajhwok): After a fresh survey, 53 new historic sites have been registered in northern Baghlan province, an official said on Tuesday.

Information and Culture director Maulavi Ezat Mir Haqqani told Pajhwok Afghan News his department sent two officials to conduct a survey about historic sites.

He said the officials during their month-long survey identified 53 new historic sites in Baghlan province.

According to him, the newly identified sites are located in Khost, Farang, Guzargahi Nur, Burka and Nahrin districts.

He said some of the sites dated back to Islamic era, some others to Kushan Empire while some other sites were related to the era of King Amanullah Khan.

The sites included citadels, caravanserais and some mounds.

Khalil Khitab, the commander of historic sites protection unit, said some of the historic sites might have been robbed in the past, but during the past couple of years no one was allowed to do such actions.

According to Khitab, local people and tribal elders had promised the historic sites protection unit their cooperation to protect such sites.

Earlier this year, 15 new sites in nine districts of Baghlan were registered as historical areas.
