KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Almost half of the schools in the Sabari district of southeastern Khost province are without buildings and as a result students are faced with many problems.

Local residents say no attention was paid to the district during the past 20 years by successive governments and as result the town lags behind in many sectors including education.

Masoud Rahman Gagarzai, the principal of Lewankhel Gagar Aba High School, said their school had no building of its own and was being run in a small rented house.

He said they paid the house rent in cooperation with local residents.

He told Pajhwok hundreds of students still lacked shelter and attended their lessons under the open skies.

He said only five classes were taught in the rooms of the house and the rest were taught in the open.

He said due to lack of space, the students were unable to concentrate on their study.

He added area elders had many times shared the issue of lack of building for the school with relevant officials, but the problem remained unaddressed.

Some students of the Lewankhel Gagar Aba School also asked the concerned authorities to construct a building for their school.

A student, Mohammad Arif, said the available building lacked the capacity to accommodate all students and as a result they faced many problems.

He urged the government to construct a building for their school and also resolve the issue of shortage of teachers in their school.

Local residents also complained of being neglected over the past 20 years and deprived of development projects.

A resident, Dali Khan, told Pajhwok that every regime that came treated them like stepmother.

He urged the caretaker government to understand the problems of Sabari district residents and take concrete steps to solve them.

He grumbled: “We lack water, school, clinic, nothing is provided to us, the poor is neglected. No one has worked for us.”

Khost Education Department officials say 15 schools in Sabari district have no buildings.

Khost Education Department spokesman Syed Kabir Sangin told Pajhwok that he had shared the problem of lack of school buildings with the ministry and partner institutions and hoped the problem would be solved.

He added a primary school was established in Sabari district after the Islamic Emirate’s takeover. God willing, this problem will be considered, educational facilities and services will be provided.”

Khost Information and Culture directorShabir Ahmad Osmani told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Islamic Emirate had paid more attention to all areas neglected in the last 20 years.

He mentioned Spera district, Janikhel area of Nadershah Kot district, Alisher district, Bak district, Musa Khel district and Sabari district as areas that the previous regime did not provide services to and were affected by wars.

Besides Khost, hundreds of schools in other provinces do not have buildings and their students study under the open sky.
