5 water supply projects being executed in Takhar

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Construction work has been launched on five water supply projects worth more than 24 million afghanis in northern Takhar province to provide clean drinking water to 15,000 people.

Mullah Azmat Noor Mohammad, director of rural rehabilitation and development, said people of the areas where the projects were being implemented had been facing shortage of potable water. He said the projects were being executed in Rustaq district and Taloqan City, the provincial capital.

He said the schemes would consume more than 24 million afghanis provided by the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF). The projects would enable 15,474 people to find access to potable water including school students.

He added about 13,581 people would get work opportunity in these projects.

Meanwhile, residents of the areas, who are worried about the lowering underground water, welcomed the implementation of the projects.

Mohammad Qaseem Hamkar, a resident of Taloqan city, said the underground water had plummeted in the province and projects would address the problem of shortage of potable water.

He called for implementation of more such public welfare projects.

Meanwhile, Haji Hassan Saberi, an official of Takhar province, said the government was trying to implement welfare projects in cooperation with aid giving organizations.

He asked people to monitor uplift projects during their implementation and cooperate with the government.
