KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 78 people from Afghanistan and Pakistan were confirmed to be among those killed in last week’s shipwreck off the coast of Greece, the Afghanistan Embassy in Italy said.

The fishing trawler that capsized on Wednesday was carrying about 800 people, according to reports.

The Afghanistan Embassy in Italy wrote on its twitter page, about 78 refugees from Afghanistan and Pakistan lost their lives in the disaster.

The embassy said hundreds of refugees were missing.

The embassy did not specifically mention the number of Afghans and Pakistanis who died in the tragedy.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Zia Ahmad Takal said efforts were underway with various sources to identify Afghans refugees in the ship.

The Afghanistan Embassy in Italy asked Afghans to refrain from going abroad on smuggling routes and not trust of international smugglers.

Pakistan declared Sunday as a day of mourning and had arrested several suspected human traffickers.
