KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan has reached self-sufficiency in the steel production and could supply iron for the local demand, according to the country’s Steel Mills Union (SMU) on Tuesday.
SMU Executive Director Abdul Naseer Reshtya during the inauguration ceremony of Faqiri Steel second phase said around 42 steel mills were currently existed nationwide.
He said the steel production sector was the first sector that generated its raw material at home and these items were on the decline each day.
He stressed the need for setting priorities in the excavation of natural resources and said all local reservoirs should not be explored simultaneously.
Sakhi Ahmad Paiman, deputy head of the Industry and Mining Chamber (IMC) said that an industrial movement has started and Afghanistan was also developing.
He stressed the new industrial movement should be hailed and appreciated.
He said around $500 million had been invested in 42 steel mills.
He said Afghanistan would be developed with the efforts of private sector and there was no need for foreigners.
He assured that government was standing with private sector.
It is pertinent to mention that $10 million had been invested in Faqiri mill while 700 people direct and indirectly provided with work opportunity.
