KABUL (Pajhwok): United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says that 5.6 million Afghan refugees and 295,000 asylum seekers are living in foreign countries.

The UN Refugee Agency published these figures and said that 9.2 million Afghans had forcibly  been displaced worldwide.

The source said 5.6 million Afghans were immigrants and people with similar status to refugees, and 295,000 others were asylum seekers.

The UNHCR also said that 3.25 million Afghans had been displaced inside Afghanistan.

However, the agency did not state the reasons for the displacement of Afghans, but conflict, unemployment, poverty and seeking a better life are said to be the main reasons for Afghan migration.

In its latest report, the International Organisation of Migration (IOM) has said 3.6 million Afghans migrated to foreign countries in 2021 and 2022.

The report said during the matter of two years, 3.6 million Afghans migrated to other countries, with 70 percent of them going to Iran, 18 percent to Pakistan and 11 percent to Turkey and two percent to European countries.
