FARAH (Pajhwok): The residents of Gulistan district in western Farah province still contact each other through satellite phones and letters as they have been deprived of telecom services since last two decades.

Javad Haidari, a resident of Gulistan district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they still communicated with their relatives through letters as there was no telecommunication network in their district.

He added wealthy people used satellite phones to communicate and solve their problems, but economically week people wrote letters to each other, asking the government to activate telecom services in their district.

Another resident, Naqeebullah, also said there was no telecom tower in the district and sometimes rumors were spread that antennas would be installed, but such rumors never proved correct.

He said many people still contacted their relatives by sending letters or going to the district center to use satellite phone.

He said the government should fulfill its responsibility by providing telecom services to the district.

Grey-bearded Haji Ghafoor, a resident of Siah Goshi village, said they lived in a mountainous area which was deprived of telecommunication services.

He said their area had been deprived of telecom and other service for the past 20 years  and asked the government to pay more attention to their problems.

“When a family member or patient leaves home, his family remains unaware about his condition until he returns.”

Telecommunication and Information Technology officials confirm that Gulistan district has not been provided telecom services in the past 20 years.

The department director, Abdul Majeed Abuzar, told Pajhwok they had shared the issue of no telecommunication service in Gulistan district with the center and hoped action would be taken in this regard.

He said currently new telecom sites were being established in Kandahar zone and the work would be extended to Gulistan district later.

He said according to the plan, first Salam network would be issued permit to cover Gulistan district and then other areas.
