KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has promised to help Afghanistan in treating drug addicts and providing alternative source of income to farmers.

The Ministry of Interior wrote on its twitter page that MoI deputy director of counter-narcotics Mullah Abdul Haq Akhund met with UNODC representative in Afghanistan Anubha Sood and the delegation accompanying her.

During the meeting, Akhund sought UN cooperation in providing alternative livelihoods to farmers, treating drug addicts and providing them jobs.

He said: “The MoI anti-narcotics department conducted poppy eradication operations across the country, clearing most parts of the country of the illicit plant. Poppy eradication operations are underway in Bakakhshan province and in the few next days the whole country will be cleared of this illegal plant.”

Anubha Sood and her delegation promised full cooperation in arranging alternative livelihoods for farmers and treatment of drug addicts.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has banned the cultivation, production and smuggling of all kinds of drugs in the country.
