KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Thursday said reports of the forceful suppression of a peaceful protest by women against the ban on beauty salons were deeply concerning.

On its Facebook page, the UN mission called the ban on salons the latest denial of women’s rights in Afghanistan –

“Afghans have the right to express views free from violence. De facto authorities must uphold this,” UNAMA wrote, a day after security forces violently broke up a protest by dozens of women in Kabul city using tasers and shot their guns into the air.

The Vice and Virtue and Complaints Ministry on June 26 gave one month to all salons in Afghanistan to wind down their businesses.

Reacting to the ban, some women on Wednesday held a protest rally n Kabul city holding placards in their hands written with words “justice, bread, work.”

A number of international institutions have asked the caretaker government to remove restrictions on women and girls.
