KABUL (Pajhwok): Angry protesters have set alight the Swedish embassy in Baghdad early Thursday morning, a media report said.
Incensed over the desecration of the Holy Quran, hundreds of people torched the embassy before the planned burning of the Quran in Sweden, Reuters reported.
In a statement, the foreign ministry in Stockholm said all embassy staff members were safe and asked the Iraqi government to secure diplomatic missions.
Shia scholar Muqtada Sadr’s supporters took to the streets against the second expected burning of the Quran in Sweden in a week.
Telegram videos showed protesters assembling around the embassy and chanting slogans in support of Sadr before attacking the embassy complex.
The foreign ministry in Baghdad said the Iraqi government had ordered security forces to probe the incident, unmask the attackers and hold them to account.
