KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): A two-year-old child has been killed by kidnappers in southeastern Khost province, an official said on Tuesday.
Mohammad was kidnapped from last Friday from the Matun Wargha village of Khost City. On Monday night, his dead body was found.
Police spokesman Mustaghfir Gurbaz told Pajhwok Afghan News the abductors had demanded a ransom for the child’s release.
But the victim’s family could not pay the ransom due to its poor economic situation and the captors subsequently killed child, the police official added.
He said the abductors were neighbours of the child and all of them, including family leader Maroof Khan, had been arrested and were being interrogated.
Karimullah Naziri, a relative of the child, confirmed to Pajhwok the kidnappers had sought $11,000 in ransom from the victim’s family.
He also said the father of Mohammad was unable to pay the money and the kidnappers killed his son.
“Initially, the abductors demanded $11,000 and then lowered their demand to $5,000 before they killed the child brutally,” Naziri revealed.
Meanwhile, enraged residents of the area asked the security officials to put the killers on a public trial and make an example of them.
