KABUL (Pajhwok): Influential figures and university teachers in eastern Nangarhar province have asked the acting government to allow women to pursue higher education and hand over government posts to those eligible.
During a meeting with acting Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, the elders said the nation should see itself in the government.
Haqqani told the elders that problems and shortcomings existed, but they would be solved by working together with the nation with patience and courage.
The Ministry of Interior in a statement said Sirajuddin Haqqani met with professors and tribal elders of Nangarhar during his visit to the province.
Speaking on behalf of scholars, Maulvi Allah Muhammad said: “We will pray for your success, but you are being tested in serving the nation. We advise the rulers to open doors to serving the people and the religion.”
Ahmad Tariq on behalf of private universities said: “We are ready to sacrifice our lives for the religion and ready to accept whatever conditions are set for starting education of girls in universities. Afghans should not be forced to send their daughters and sisters to other places, where we have no role in creating and designing the environment.”
Tribal elder Faridon Momand said: “The nation should see itself in the government. We obeyed you in the mountains, something easier in plains. The nation has fulfilled its responsibility and now it’s time for the government to fulfill its responsibility.”
Mawlavi Noorullah Nasir, a religious scholar, said work should be handed over to those eligible.
Acting Minister of Interior Sirajuddin Haqqani said Nangarhar was home to science and culture and was an address of science and art.
He said there were problems and shortcomings, but they would be resolved by working together with the people with patience and courage.
He said: “I am glad with your good advice. You spoke from the heart. We talked to our officials here about good behavior with the people and gave them recommendations. Any problems and requests that are related to us, God willing, we will solve them soon, and I will convey messages to Sheikh Sahib (Supreme leader Haibatullah Akhunzada).
He also said that the people of Nangarhar had always supported the ‘Mujahideen’ against the invasion.
