TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): The Department of Agriculture and Livestock has constructed 12 cold storages at a cost of six million afghanis in central Uruzgan province.

Inaugurating the cold storages at a ceremony here, Maulvi Abdul Manan Farooqi, the spokesman of the provincial Agriculture and Livestock department, said every cold storage was eight meters long and four meters wide and a total of 12 cold storages were established and put into service in different areas of Tirinkot city.

He said these cold storages had the capacity to preserve hundreds of tons of agricultural products for six months.

He added farmers mostly cultivated onion in the province and they could store their harvest in the cold storages and sell it when the market was good.

Some farmers welcomed the development and hoped their crop yields value would increase with establishment of the cold storages.

Azizullah, a farmer in Deh Yak area, said he would keep his onion crop yield in one of the cold storages and would supply it to markets when the prices increase.

He added previously there was no place to preserve onions and he used to sell it at low price as soon as he harvested the crop.
