KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) on Monday announced that a committee was working on a draft to reopen universities for girls and it will be unveiled once finalized.
The announcement was made by Dr Lotfullah Khairkhwa, deputy minister of higher education, in the government accountability program to the nation in Kabul.
He said the committee consisted of officials of the Ministry of Education and several other institutions and the MoHE was also a member.
He said some work had been done in the area of rereading the academic curriculum.
So far, 90 subjects have been finalized, 70 of them are related to bachelors’ program, 13 to master’s program, and seven belonged to PhD.
According to him, after the political change, 200 to 250 university professors have left the country, but in the last six months, no professor left the country and the ministry also did not receive any resignations.
He said a total of 6,000 professor positions had been lying vacant in public sector universities since the previous government.
However, he added the people should not be worried about this because professors in all countries leave their universities and go to other countries.
He added the Ministry of Higher Education had started three doctoral programs and 15 master’s programs last year, and currently nine doctoral programs and 40 master’s programs were ongoing in Afghanistan.
He added last year, 180,000 students were enrolled in public universities and in total, more than 400,000 students were studying in the country’s universities.
According to him, no proposal to grant a license to a private university has come to the ministry this year and no private university has been closed.
Khairkhah noted that 350 acres of the ministry’s land had been returned from usurpers.
