HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A charitable institution in western Herat province has provided free teaching of the Holy Quran and tailoring learning skills for more than 2,000 women and children.
Abdul Ahad Sikandari, chief of the orgnaisation called Milad, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had launched Quran teaching classes and tailoring courses for 2,100 less fortunate women and children.
He said the organisation was currently conducting 26 classes for learning the Quran besides arranging tailoring courses for over 1,000 women on the basis of an agreement with the Work and Social Affairs Department.
Participants of these classes and courses, meanwhile, expressed happiness over getting the opportunity of learning the Holy Quran and tailoring skills.
Malina, one of the beneficiaries, has already learnt the Quran and now she is teaching other women.
Malina said schools above the sixth grade had been shut for girls, who should grab the opportunity and learn the Quran and tailoring skills.
Jamila, one of the students, said: “I come here to learn the Quran myself and then help my family learn it.”
Humaira, a woman learning tailoring skills, thanked the Milad leadership. She hailed the course as a moment of pleasure for poor families.
She stressed the need for creating more skills development opportunities for resourceless women.
Experts believe poverty is increasing day by day in the country and the creation of opportunities has a positive impact on the lives of poor people.
Sibghatullah Yourish, a university lecturer, said learning professional skills had a positive impact on the economy of families. With job opportunities shrinking, skillful women remain unemployed.
Yourish lauded the spirit of philanthropists and arrangement of such programmes. At the same time, he stressed, the government must also discharge its responsibility for the welfare of the needy people, especially in solving the problems of poor families.
Meanwhile, the provincial administration has listed supporting people, workers, traders and residents as its top priority.
Maulavi Nisar Ahmad Elyas, spokesman for the governor, affirmed the Islamic Emirate’s commitment to the welfare of people. The local administration was helping working women and traders in the province, he concluded.
