Young Afghan girl commits suicide in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD (Pajhwok): An Afghan girl has committed suicide in the Pakistani capital Islamabad due to economic problems and her delayed immigration.

Suraya Sabir, deputy head of the Afghan Refugees Council in Pakistan, said: “Maryam Sadat a 27-year-old girl committed suicide by throwing herself from the fifth floor of a building in B17 district of Islamabad this morning”.

He said that the girl came to Pakistan with her family from Balkh province a year ago and got engaged 9 months ago.

Maryam finished university and included her mother’s name in her immigration case and they had passed two interview stages, but because they were waiting for a long time and faced economic challenges, she committed suicide.

Also, Ziauddin, one of Maryam’s relatives, confirmed the incident and told Pajhwok Afghan News that Maryam’s family was not in a good economic situation and could even afford to hold her funeral ceremonies.

He said: “We have asked all immigrants living in Pakistan in different groups to help Maryam’s family in this regard”.

The problem of burying the body remains because local people do not allow her body to be buried in the local cemetery, he added.

He said: “We are consulting with some Pakistani friends so that we can pave the way for the ceremony and burial”.

Meanwhile, Mukhtar Nagha, a resident, said that Maryam was alive after hitting the ground, but she died on the way before reaching hospital.

He clarified now the body of the Afghan girl has been transferred to the forensic department and police are investigating the matter.

He said a large number of Afghan families in Pakistan were waiting for their evacuation to foreign countries.

According to him, more such unfortunate incidents could take place.

Until now, the Pakistani police have said nothing about the motive of the suicide to the media.

It comes a month after an Afghan youth committed suicide by jumping from a building after an unsuccessful immigration case.
