PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Afghanistan are looking for a big win as if take on Sri Lankan in a do-or-die Asia Cup Group ‘B’ match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore today (Tuesday).
The winners of today’s day-night encounter qualify for the Super Four stage of the tournament being co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
On Sunday, a resurgent Bangladesh had trounced Afghanistan by 89 runs at the same venue. Today, the Afghans will have to score a huge triumph to stay in the six-nation event.
Sri Lanka, the defending champions, had registered a five-wicket win over Bangladesh in Pallekele.
A 68-run victory or to successful chase within 35 overs will see the Afghans advancing to the next stage of the contest.
The Shahidi-led squad chose to take rest on Monday in the wake of Sunday’s game against Bangladesh in scorching heat.
“Afghanistan face a must-win situation against Sri Lanka and will have to do their best to achieve all targets to qualify for the next stage,” says assistant coach Raees Ahmadzai.
